Man remanded over double deaths

A 20-year-old man has been remanded in custody after being charged with the murders of two pensioners at a north Wales farm.

Martin Cartwright, from Wolverhampton, has been accused following the deaths of Elsie Davies, aged 88, and her friend Joseph Ashton, in his 80s at Tower Farm in Llangollen.

On Friday, an inquest into the deaths was opened and adjourned.

Farmhand Mr Cartwright was arrested on Wednesday night and questioned at Wrexham police station.

He was remanded until a crown court hearing next week - there was no application for bail.

The inquest on Friday established one of the deceased was Joseph Ashton, thought to be 82-years-old, of 14 Hunter Avenue, Warrington in Chesire.

He was found in the kitchen of the farmhouse at Tower Farm - he had died from multiple injuries.

Elsie Davies, who was 88, was found in the cowshed on the same day.

As police officers continue to search the scene, local people are being urged to stay calm.

Officers from Wrexham have been liaising with farming unions to help reassure neighbouring landowners.

Small farm

Speaking about the man being questioned, police said he had connections with the north Wales area.

Elsie Davies, who had lived at the farm for more than 60 years, was found in an outbuilding just after lunchtime on Wednesday.

Joseph Ashton, a friend of Mrs Davies who helped out on the small farm, was found earlier in the kitchen.

The results of a post mortem examination revealed both victims died of multiple injuries. The type of weapon used is not yet known.

Officers have found the red Skoda car belonging to the farm-hand, following a public appeal for information.

Detective Chief Superintendent Peter Ackerley, who is leading the investigation, said the deaths were "horrific".

'Recluse'

One of Mrs Davies' neighbours said: "She has lived here longer than any of us can remember, certainly more than 60 years.

"She was married but lost her husband Ben a long time ago.

"She kept to herself most of the time and was a bit of a recluse, really."

Joseph Ashton was described by police as "a family friend who helped out at the farm from time to time" but lived outside north Wales.

Assembly Member Karen Sinclair, who lives one mile from the murder scene, said the Llangollen community was in shock.
