After the game, which Cardiff won 1-0, violence broke out as bricks and bottles were thrown between opposing fans.
Police said the incidents were quickly dealt with after officers on horseback charged. Several groups of fans tore down dividing fences but were forced back to their coaches by officers. South Wales Police arrested a total of 34 people before the game in a move to prevent trouble. All but two were Swansea fans, who were held before the match. Preventative measures The force says those Swansea fans - aged between 16 and 43 - were arrested in advance of the game to prevent a breach of the peace. They have since been released. Two people - thought to be Cardiff fans - were arrested inside Ninian Park during the match.
A 24 year-old man from Bridgend was arrested for throwing missiles and a 21-year-old man from Merthyr Tydfil was arrested as part of investigations into violence after the Cardiff-Stoke match on 1 May. One police officer was taken to hospital with a shoulder injury. Chief Superintendent Jeff Cooksley said: "I have always maintained that genuine fans coming to the city to enjoy the football will be welcomed by Cardiff officers. "I have also made it clear that trouble-makers who spoil the occasion for others will not be tolerated by South Wales Police." |
