Cyril the Swan eyes assembly career
Cyril the Swan
Cyril the Swan: A new career in politics beckons
Swansea City FC's mascot Cyril the Swan is looking to a possible career in politics following the election of fellow footballing mascot H'Angus the Monkey as mayor of Hartlepool in England's local elections.

Cyril apparently believes he could follow H'Angus example and get elected to the Welsh Assembly in the poll in a year's time.

His election pledge to the voters would be to donate his AM's salary to his troubled club.

H' Angus - otherwise known as 28-year-old Stuart Drummond - will earn 53,000 as Hartlepool's mayor after Thursday's shock election.

The monkey's vote-winning slogan was "free bananas for schoolchildren" and he now plans to give up his mascot day job to concentrate on his mayoral career.

Cyril the Swan's spokesman Peter Owen said: "Cyril was very interested in the English election results.

"He quite fancies being as assembly member because he could represent our supporters across a wide area."

Politics would be a completely new area for the swan who has previously put himself for the job of England football manager.

He has also had several brushes with the footballing authorities in Wales - and even appeared before the Welsh Football Association charged with bringing the game into disrepute after a touchline invasion.

However, none of his convictions are of a criminal nature which would bar him from standing for election for for five years and he does not believed his unruly reputation would rule him out of a job at Cardiff Bay.

Cyril's spokesman revealed he had considered a political career before H'Angus's poll success in Hartlepool.

""He did once consider joining the Conservatives but the colour blue brings him out in a rash because of the Cardiff City connections.

"He'll probably be an independent, and then he can use his left and right wings at the same time," added Mr Owen.

An AM's salary could help Swansea City on the road to recovery after earier financial troubles threatened the very existence of the Third Division club.

He would also retain his mascot's role.

Touchline ban

"Cyril does not actually need any money so his salary of 41,500 would come in very useful to the club, and working three days a week would mean he could still do a proper job at the Vetch."

Football fans in south Wales are accustomed to hearing about the antics of Cyril the Swan.

He achieved notoriety after his antics on and around the pitch landed him a ban from the touchline.

Last autumn police began an investigation into claims Cyril assaulted a woman at a mascots race.

The incident was alleged to have taken place before the event at Huntingdon, in Cambridgeshire.
