| Friday, 26 April, 2002, 16:30 GMT 17:30 UK School suspends boy over illegal drug ![]() An inquiry is currently underway at the school An 11-year-old boy has been suspended from a north Wales secondary school after he was found with cannabis. The boy is a first year pupil at Ysgol Uwchradd Dyffryn Nantlle in Penygroes.
He was found to be in possession of the class C drug after being searched by teachers on Tuesday. An investigation into what he was doing with the illegal drug has been launched. However, it is understood that boy was not selling it. The headmaster said the boy would not be suspended permanently. Gwynedd County Council - the local education authority - said it is aware of the situation. "We can confirm that a child brought cannabis to school," a statement issued on Thursday said.
"The school is dealing with the matter in accordance with the disciplinary processes and have referred the matter for the attention of the police." North Wales Police confirmed that they were aware of the matter and were dealing with it. Last week two pupils from a school in Dolgellau, north Wales, were suspended and a third expelled for a similar offence. Although possession of cannabis remains illegal, a number of senior police officers and politicians - including Cardiff Central MP Jon Owen Jones - have proposed declassifying the drug. However, one of the main concerns against such a move is its possible impact on children. In March, a government-commissioned survey of pupils in England and Wales reported that one in five children aged 11-15 had used drugs in 2001. The National Centre for Social Research and the National Foundation for Educational Research found that cannabis was by far the most likely drug to have been used by schoolchildren, with 13% of pupils trying it in the last year. |
