| Saturday, 27 April, 2002, 10:09 GMT 11:09 UK Scouts adopt 'outdoor' approach ![]() The Scouts boasts nearly 30 million members worldwide Scouts from across north Wales pitched their tents in Flintshire on Saturday as leaders prepared to unveil a revamp of the association. The organisation has launched two new sections, promising to "put the outdoors back into scouting".
Over 100 scouts were expected to attend the weekend event which included activities from climbing to space-hopper racing. The Scouts is the world's largest mixed organisation boasting a membership of almost 30 million. But despite its worldwide appeal, scout leaders are aware of the need to develop the organisation. Nick Griffiths, 24, who is leading the revamp in north east Wales, said it will open up new opportunities. "It is a new way of scouting which is much more flexible open to a greater age range," he said.
"Times have changed and obviously the scouting movement has to change. "It will put the outdoors back into the scouting movement." The event is part of a UK wide initiative to inform people of the changes to the scouting movement. The introduction of the new sections will replace Venture Scouts for people aged between 15-20. There will be Explorer Scouts for the 14-18 year olds and the Scout Network for those aged between 15-20. Mr Griffiths believes that scouting can teach people important 'life skills'. "Scouting is a way of life it gives people skills for later on in life. "All the corporate businesses talk about team building - you get it all for free in the Scouts." The weekend was organised to make existing members aware of the changes and to encourage more people to join the movement. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
