Petition against school merger plans
Parents hand in the petition
More than 1,000 people signed the petition
Angry parents concerned over plans to reorganise secondary education in Wrexham have handed in a petition with more than 1,000 signatures.

Wrexham County Borough Council have proposed merging three schools in the area and building two 'super' schools.

The Groves sign
The Groves would close under the plan

Under the plan the Groves would be closed and pupils dispersed to Bryn Offa and St David's.

People who are unhappy about the proposal have until Saturday 27 April to make their concerns known.

However, parents claim their opinions and those of their children have been discounted.

One campaigner who wished to remain anonymous to protect the identity of her 13-year-old child said they have many worries.

It's not in the interest of the children and I believe personally that it's money driven and there's no thought gone in for the children

Campaigner, Joanne Lench

"The main concern is that there's a school that's going to close and that's going to affect the Groves especially.

"Super schools would be great but in the process there's going to be a lot of upset and the children's education will suffer.

"I have friends with children in the Groves School who are doing very well, the council are making out that it's not a good school and parents have become frightened and are already starting to take their children out."

She added that youngsters do not want change: "They say there's no support from the children but two girls in the same year from St David's School in one day got 95 signatures from other pupils to support no change."

Joanne Lench, from Wrexham, was amongst the protestors at the council offices on Friday.

"It's not in the interest of the children and I believe personally that it's money driven and there's no thought gone in for the children," she said.

Relevant personnel

"Not one of these councillors have got one child at any of the schools who will have their education effected by it all."

Wrexham Council have carried out interviews with affected groups, including representatives of the pupils at each of the three schools.

The campaigners were unable to hand in the petition, signed from people throughout Wrexham, to educational officers on Friday.

However, the document was accepted on their behalf and will be passed on to the relevant personnel.
