| Monday, 15 April, 2002, 11:58 GMT 12:58 UK Zeta Jones hires Welsh nanny ![]() Zeta Jones wants her son to learn about his Welsh roots Home is where the heart is for Hollywood actress, Catherine Zeta Jones - and that has to be Wales. The Swansea-born Los Angeles-based star is said to have become even more homesick for her native country since the birth of her 19-month-old son Dylan.
And to make sure he does not miss out on his Welsh heritage, the 32-year-old face of make-up firm Elizabeth Arden is said to have hired a nanny, originally from Barry, near Cardiff, to look after Dylan. The actress is expected in Wales at the end of this week to take part in sponsored walk for Wales's first children's hospital. The visit may underline the concerns which friends say she has that her son will know little about his Swansea roots because his famous parents are so busy and because the toddler has only made a few brief visits to Wales. Newspaper reports suggest Zeta Jones is willing to pay 70,000 a year to tackle the issue by hiring a Welsh nanny.
The nanny, Judy Cole, who is originally from South Wales, was first hired by British socialite and opera singer Jennifer Gucci to look after her daughter Gemma. Apparently, by the time Ms Cole left them, Gemma spoke with a slight Welsh accent. Ms Cole has also been hired by Kathleen Turner and her husband, property tycoon Jay Weiss. The stars are said to be impressed by Ms Cole reportedly having no time for "sloppy American ways" such at TV dinners. But the real test in Dylan's education could come when he has to face his first day at school. Observers say Zeta Jones wants Dylan to go to boarding school in Wales, while Douglas is determined that Dylan will attend a New York school.
The addition to the Zeta Jones-Douglas staff follows their decision to employ Swansea handyman Dan Whalley, 25, as a full-time worker at their sprawling LA mansion. The couple wanted someone they could trust and Mr Whalley is a friend of Catherine's brother Lyndon, 27. They wanted to be sure they could maintain tight security at their six-bedroom property in Pacific Palisades. Mr Whalley moved into their home last month after leaving his job in Swansea. The couple are thought to have secured the services of the nanny through an agency. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
