| Monday, 15 April, 2002, 08:42 GMT 09:42 UK Cat 'epidemic' campaign takes to road ![]() Cat numbers will spiral without tighter controls A campaign by the RSPCA to halt the spread of unwanted cats takes to the road in north east Wales on Monday. The two month-long mobile cat neutering programme - the first of its kind in Wales - is launched in Wrexham. The RSPCA team will visit areas which are considered as hotspots for overpopulation of cats.
Owners who receive state benefits will be able to have their pet neutered free of charge. The mobile clinic will be based in Wrexham until Friday before spending a week in Rhyl, and then on to Caernarfon. Further sessions will then take place in south west and south east Wales. The RSPCA is tackling the overpopulation of cats head on, after its own research showed that millions of animals are left uncared for on the UK's streets.
RSPCA inspectors are regularly confronted with unpleasant situations, such as the discovery last year of 27 cats in a car in Llanwrtyd Wells, mid Wales. The animals were in an appalling condition, suffering from malnutrition, flea infestations and conjunctivitis. RSPCA Wales Manager Kate Davies said: "Each unwanted litter puts added pressure on the existing cat problem with thousands of cats in our animal centres looking for new homes. "I am delighted that with this mobile cat neutering clinic we are able to help control the unwanted cat population all over Wales." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
