| Monday, 18 March, 2002, 16:56 GMT Town centre ban for violent criminals ![]() The authorites are cracking down on violence Criminals could be banned from a north Wales town centre after police issued a warning over the ability to control the rising number of late night revellers. In what police believe is the first scheme of its kind in Wales, exclusion orders have been set up in Wrexham to keep repeat offenders away from pubs and clubs.
The orders will be made by magistrates and depending on the severity of the offence - people could be banned from between three months and two years. Under the scheme police will circulate photographs of excluded individuals to town centre pubs and CCTV operators. Individuals, who breach the order, have been warned they may be brought back before the courts. The scheme has been set up as part of Nightsafe - an initiative aimed at reducing the amount violent behaviour within Wrexham town centre. Inspector Stan Wasiuk, from Wrexham Police has said the initiative has already proved to be successful. "This new exclusion protocol is a major achievement for the Nightsafe initiative and has already resulted in the removal of a number of offenders from licensed premises," he said.
"We believe its the first of its kind in Wales and will send a clear signal to the public that violent behaviour will not be tolerated." It comes a month after a senior North Wales Police officer raised concerns about dealing with the volume of people leaving new late night premises in the town. Superintendent Paul Davies warned licensing magistrates in his annual report that officers could have to deal with up to 6,000 people leaving the venues. Supt Davies warned the proliferation of nightspots in the town centre had reached "saturation point". Terry Garner, lead officer on crime and disorder for Wrexham council said: "The exclusion from licensed premises of violent individuals is key to resolving violent behaviour. "The public can be assured that every opportunity to make the town centre a safer place is being explored." | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
