'Green' energy targets set to rise
Wind farm
Report calls for growth in renewable energy sources
Wales needs a dramatic increase in the number of windfarms to meet suggested new targets for the generation of renewable energy, according to a new report.

The Welsh Assembly's Economic Development Committee is expected to urge the adoption of a target to produce enough electricity from renewable sources by 2010 to supply more than 3m homes, and doubling that figure by 2020.

Energy Minister Brian Wilson:

To achieve that target, Wales will have to adopt a wide-range of environmentally-friendly technologies including a large expansion of photovoltaic - or PV - electricity production in homes and offices.

The report also envisages wind-energy production growing by four times, in addition to a ten-fold increase in the number of solar-heated water installations.

Major windfarm projects in Wales are already the source of controversy.

In December 2001 UK Energy Minister Brian Wilson gave the go-ahead for the biggest wind farm in the Britain to be built in Ceredigion in west Wales.

Once built, the 35m development at Cefn Croes should supply nearly 50% of the electricity needs of Ceredigion and 1% of the needs of Wales.

Tidal barrage

Another windfarm is proposed for the Cambrian Mountains in mid Wales by a group called Camddwr.

The report before the assembly on Wednesday suggests the construction of a small tidal barrage on an estuary the size of the Conwy as part of the move to renewable energies.
