A deputy headteacher in north Wales has started driving pupils to school after a protest over the withdrawal of a bus service.

Around 30 parents at the Welsh language school in Wrexham held a demonstration last month after the service was cancelled.

Children have been kept from the school

Parents at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd claim their children either have to walk two miles to school or catch two buses - a situation which they say is unacceptable.

As a temporary solution to the problem deputy head Aneurin Roberts borrowed a mini-bus for a week to ferry the children to school himself.

Mr Roberts has been collecting the mini-bus from the nearby St Christophers' School and taking the pupils to and from school.

However, parents at the Welsh Language school are worried they will be back to square one by next week.

Some have kept their children away from school.

Sally Phillips said she could not send her 13-year-old daughter to school because she had had no way of getting her there.

Ms Phillips said: "We didn't actually keep them at home, we had no choice.

"If it wasn't for this temporary bus the children would have been off this week as well.

"We don't want free transport we are willing to pay the 40 pence per journey, the same as the other children."

Relocation

Wrexham Council have said that they will not arrange a bus for the pupils, and the borrowed mini-bus is for this week only.

The authority has said it cannot provide an alternative service because the pupils do not live more than three miles away.

The issue of transport was highlighted following the relocation of the school 18 months ago from the Hightown area of Wrexham to the Cefn Road area.

Initially, a bus service was provided but was withdrawn due to a lack of profit.

Under the new system children as young as 11 have to travel along busy roads or use public transport.

Parents have planned a meeting for next week to discuss their next step.
