No drinking zones introduced

Wrexham council hope to ban alcohol in areas of town
Areas of Wrexham town centre have become no drinking zones after concerns were raised about drunken behaviour.

On Tuesday councillors agreed to prohibit the drinking of alcohol in the Peace Gardens, Llwyn Isaf and Queen's Square.

We should make it more family friendly, instead there is drinking and bottles everywhere

Molly Beresford, Councillor

Under the new scheme police officers will have the power to arrest a person who refused to stop drinking in the designated areas.

Local councillor Molly Beresford believes it is an issue which needed to be addressed.

"The local alcoholics have been gathering there and it has become quite a problem," she said.

"I think it is a good idea, Llwyn Isaf is a lovely green which is used by families.

Ms Beresford added: "We should make it more family friendly, instead there is drinking and bottles everywhere.

"It is not a very nice atmosphere for families and visitors to Wrexham," she added.

But not everyone has spoken out in favour of the ban.

Alcohol support groups have expressed concern that the measures could mean more court appearances for people in need of practical help.

Similar Ban

Local authorities in Wales have been urged by the Welsh Assembly to designate areas where drinking alcohol would be outlawed.

Last month drinking in Rhyl town centre was banned following complaints from members of the public.

Drinking in the seaside resort's town centre was stopped by the council after problems with drunken behaviour outside the town hall and railway station.

The new public order gave North Wales Police on-the-spot powers to deal with offenders.
