| Saturday, 16 February, 2002, 09:39 GMT Town 'saturated' by new bars A senior North Wales Police officer has raised concerns about dealing with revellers leaving new late night premises in Wrexham. Superintendent Paul Davies warned licensing magistrates in his annual report that officers could have to deal with up to 6,000 people leaving new venues. Supt Davies said the proliferation of nightspots in the town centre had effectively reached "saturation point".
Wrexham magistrates have expressed sympathy with the police position, but a number of new licences have recently been granted in the town. One new venue has a capacity for 1,800 people. A bid on Friday by North Wales Police Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom for 92 more beat officers was adjusted by the Police Authority to 56. Supt Davies said the rapid expansion of Wrexham's nightlife meant logistical problems for officers. "We have evidence Wrexham is attracting people from Warrington and Cheshire and the college campus has grown considerably, bringing in more students," he explained.
"We are talking about a lot of people who have consumed alcohol in the town centre," added Supt Davies. Licensing committee chairman Edward Wardle added his own concerns after new licences were granted to venues in High Street and Town Hill. Two more are planned for the same area and approval has been granted for a new bar in Brook Street with capacity for up to 1,800 people. "We are reaching saturation point in a small area of the town," added Supt Davies. But North Wales Police officers - who are experienced with dealing with large football crowds - will not undergo any specialist training to deal with revellers. | See also: 15 Feb 02 | Wales 15 Feb 02 | Wales 24 Oct 01 | Wales 02 Sep 01 | Wales Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
