Mostyn Docks has cost more than �17m

The aerospace company wanted to link its new wing manufacturing plant with the newly refurbished port of Mostyn.

The eventual destination is Toulouse, southern France, where the new A380 superjumbo will be assembled.

Managing Director at Mostyn Docks Jim O'Toole said: "It's all part of an integrated transport system.

"It's the start of the planning process for a transport link between Broughton and Mostyn which is welcome."

New plant

Airbus has already started building the new wing manufacturing plant in Flintshire despite making 300 redundancies and putting a freeze on recruitment.

Now that the application is passed, three different types of transport will be needed to transfer the stock.

Wings will be taken by road to the riverside at Broughton, loaded on to a barge and then onto a ship at Mostyn docks.

An access road will be built from the new plant to the Hawarden flood embankment, and a barge loading facility on the banks of the River Dee.

Green belt

County councillors had been asked to consider seriously the transport network needed to get the wings from north east Wales to Toulouse.

The development is in a green belt area but planning officers had recommended the scheme for approval.

They argued that the circumstances were exceptional.

Planning bosses stated that Airbus is important to the local economy, and government policies encourage facilities for the transfer of freight from road to rail or water.

A new berth will now be built at Mostyn docks to deal with the transfer of the wings.
