The 'Women's e-Village' will be tailored to the needs of the individual, and essential creche and travel facilities will make it easier for women to attend and complete training schemes.

Welsh MEP Glenys Kinnock said the project should help break down the gender divide.

She said: "The women's e-Village recognises the need to tap the skills and values of Welsh women in Wales' most deprived ward, Rhyl West."

"It is startling that IT has been thought of as a man's world and therefore women need every encouragement to lead in this sector.

"The e-Village is undoubtedly a step towards bridging the digital divide between women and men."

The project has been funded jointly by the European Social Fund, Denbighshire County Council and Coleg Llandrillo.

Project manager Gemma Jones said the scheme should have psychological benefits as well as practical.

She said: "As a single parent myself I know just how hard it is for women to make the most of their potential while struggling to balance work and family.

"Many women are not fulfilling their potential because they are never given the chance to develop new skills and gain confidence in new areas."

Women will be offered all levels of IT training - from basic word processing skills to database creation and web page design.

It is hoped the two-year scheme will train more than 140 women.
