Swimmers brave weather for charity dip
Around 70 hardy fancy-dressed swimmers braved the freezing cold to take part in a Boxing Day fund-raising swim in west Wales.

Another 3,000 spectators turned up to watch the swimmers participating in the fifteenth Walrus Dip at Cefn Sidan beach in Pembrey Country Park in Carmarthenshire.

The dip is expected to raised thousands of pounds for charity.

The event has developed into a popular spectator sport since the park threw open its gates to the public free of charge for the Boxing Day event in 1986.

In the past swimmers have come dresses as anything from bananas to fishes and walruses.

This year was no exception to the high standard of costumes with participants arriving as Christmas presents and decorations.

"One team even turned up as a pack of cards," said Neil Perry, manager of Pembrey Country Park.

"This year was probably the second coldest since the event started fifteen years ago," he said.

"And the swimmers had to walk about half a mile out to get the tide which was a long way out."

Councillor Ken Griffiths, chair of the park's operations board, said "Continued support for this event is important, both to keep the tradition going and to raise funds for very worthwhile local causes.

"It can also be an enjoyable occasion for the whole family during the festive season."

On Christmas Day swimmers at Porthcawl also took part in the 37th annual swim.
