Police inquiries into the accident are continuing and the inquest into the deaths has been formally opened and adjourned until the New Year.

The funerals of Martin Biggs and Matthew Reardon are due to be held on 27 December, before a service at Gwent Crematorium.

The only survivor of the crash - Mr Reardon's brother Kristian - has told police they had just overtaken another car when the accident happened.

Minute's silence

The 22-year-old was treated for shock and hypothermia after he swam free from the vehicle when it came to rest upside down in the river.

The men were all members of the pool team at the Carpenter's Arms in Newport.

A minute's silence is to be observed in pubs in Newport on Sunday as a mark of respect to the dead men.

Gwent Police said they are not clear about the cause of the accident although they do not believe the driver of the Volkswagon Polo had been drinking.

But police have said speed could have been a factor as the crash happened near a spot where the speed limit changes from 60 to 30 within a short distance.
