Concerns over second dumping site
Dumper truck at the Trecatti tip
The Trecatti tip is now taking waste from Rhondda
The Welsh Assembly has been urged to investigate a second landfill site in south Wales after the dumping of household waste at the Nantygwyddon tip in the Rhondda was halted.

Plaid Cymru AM Dr Phil Williams said the Trecatti facility at Dowlais near Merthyr Tydfil is even closer to people's homes.

Residents are that waste previously taken to Nantygwyddon has been taken to new site since Monday after a damning report into the site convinced the local authority to shut it down.

Up to 1,000 people have signed a petition in the last few days urging the assembly to commission a similar independent investigation.

Biffa Waste Services, the company which operates the Trecatti tip, insisted it was a well-run and well managed site.

"Everything we do is openly monitored by the environment agency," said spokesman John Dresser.

"If anyone wants to make enquiries about how we help the public and industry to dispose of their waste they only have to ask."

The company said it had agreed to accept household waste from the Rhondda area for a four-week period

"It's just the same as the waste we already take," added Mr Dresser.

"There are simply a limited amount of extra loads - 30 trucks a day - which really makes no difference to the operation of the site."

Plaid Cymru-controlled Rhondda Cynon Taff council decided last week to stop dumping household waste at the Nantygwyddon tip in the wake of a critical report commissioned by the Welsh Assembly.

Its author David Purchon said the location of the Nantygwyddon tip above the village of Gelli was unsuitable for a landfill site.

He said it was too windy, too wet and too close to nearby homes.

As a temporary measure the waste was taken to the Bryn Pica Landfill site in Llwydcoed, Aberdare, until the use of Trecatti began on Monday.
