Presiding officer to stand again
Dafydd Elis-Thomas
Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas: The assembly's 'Speaker'
Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas has revealed he plans to reapply for the post of presiding officer in the Welsh Assembly.

During a question-and-answer session broadcast on the digital channel S4C2 on Thursday, 13 December, he said he would like hold on to the position if he wins his constituency seat in the 2003 election.

Lord Elis-Thomas is responsible for the day-to-day running of the assembly and has been the presiding officer for nearly three years.

He has been keeping order in the assembly chamber since he was appointed to the post during the first ever plenary session on 12 May 1999.

Lord Elis-Thomas keeps order during debates

The presiding officer - like the speaker of the House of Commons - is charged with controlling debates in the chamber and is elected for the whole of the four year term of the assembly.

The post will be one of the first to be decided after the next assembly election.

In recent times no speaker returning to the Commons after a general election has failed to be re-elected.

However there is no such precedent to follow for the assembly.

Lord Elis-Thomas's views on this and other issues have been broadcast in an interview with Esther Prytherch on S4C2.

S4C2 is a free-to-air digital channel featuring continuous live coverage and analysis of the assembly's proceedings produced by BBC Wales.
