| Friday, 7 December, 2001, 21:49 GMT Bugler brothers retire from eisteddfod ![]() Eifion and Gareth have been buglers for 25 years The National Eisteddfod of Wales is on a recruiting drive - it is looking for buglers to play the fanfare at its major ceremonies. The move follows the decision of bugler brothers Gareth and Eifion Hughes from Llanberis near Caernarfon, north Wales to retire from blowing their own trumpets after 25 years. Applications from would-be hornblowers for this important ceremonial role for Wales's greatest cultural festival closed on Friday.
The brothers have been regular fixtures at the eisteddfod's pavilion for a quarter of a century. Their instruments have been in use even longer, since 1955. The tradition of heralding the Chairing or Crowning ceremonies dates back much further but its been getting harder to keep the tradition alive. The brothers first tried to retire last year but were persuaded back this August when no replacements could be found. But this year they are determined to call their bugling to an end. "I have been doing this work for 25 years now and I thought it was time to give someone else a chance," said Eifion. "But I'm sure when it comes to August I'll be wishing it was there."
Brother Gareth - a policeman - said anyone who played the cornet ot trumpet or even euphonium - as he does - would be a suitable candidate for the bugler post. "They have to remember quite a few fanfares round the stage and they have to enjoy the eisteddfod and want to be part of it," he said. The eisteddfod has already received several applications for the job. And although the brothers are giving up the bugling to spend more time on their day jobs they will not be completely without music. They will continue to play in rival brass bands. | See also: Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
