A body of a man found in the River Taff has been identified as missing university student Kalvin Rogers.

A search was launched for the 25-year-old after police were called to an incident in Hopkinstown, near Pontypridd, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Mr Rogers body was recovered from the River Taff at Llandaff North in Cardiff shortly before midday on Monday.

Kalvin Rogers: Body found after search

Police had attended an incident in the village involving two residents. One of the men was confirmed as an off-duty police officer.

Meanwhile, The Police Complaints Authority has become involved in the investigation into the death of Mr Rogers.

South Wales Police said it has voluntarily referred the matter to the independent complaints authority.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses following reports of a confrontation at Nant-y-Coed, in which four males were seen in the garden of a house.

The group ran off from the scene.

The two residents dressed and went out to speak to the group.

They came upon them a short time later at the junction of Tymawr Road and Hopkinstown Road, where an altercation took place.

The group of four made off a second time, three in the direction of Trehafod.

Helicopter search

The fourth headed in the direction of Pontypridd, crossed the road towards the river and walked through a gap in the fence on to the riverbank.

That fourth person is believed to be Mr Rogers.

A police helicopter, dogs and specialist search resources were all involved in the search to recover the body.

Mr Rogers is in the second year of a graphic design degree at the University of Glamorgan at Treforest, near Cardiff.

Appealing for witnesses to the incident, Detective Inspector Simon Clarke said: "There was a disturbance and Kalvin and his friends all split up."

"Kalvin was seen running towards the river by a member of the public while the other three men apparently ran the other way.

"There is nothing to suggest they were chased but it is possible that Kalvin has ended up in the water."
