Public help to trace widow's killer
Mabel Leyshon and forensics examining her house
Detectives in north Wales say they are pleased with the public response to an appeal at the weekend to find the killer of a 90-year-old widow.

North Wales Police launched a fresh appeal for vital clues to trace who murdered Mabel Leyshon.

The pensioner died after being repeatedly stabbed in a "frenzied" attack at her home of 40 years in the town of Llanfairpwll on Anglesely eight days ago.

Detectives investigating the murder believe the pensioner was attacked sometime between 1430 GMT last Saturday - when she took a phone call from a friend - and lunchtime on Sunday.

At the weekend, officers questioned pedestrians and motorists in the area of Mrs Leyshon's home in Lon Pant between 1800 GMT on Saturday and 0300 GMT on Sunday in a bid to jog people's memories.

A spokesman said officers were pleased by the "positive leads" they have received, but added that it was still too early to say if any vital leads have been provided during the exercise.

Police believe that robbery or burglary may not have been a main reason for the attack, as a substantial sum of money was found untouched in the bungalow.

Mrs Leyshon's cleaner was shown photographs of the scene and it appears nothing was taken.

Bloodstained

Officers believe whoever carried out the "callous and brutal" attack would have been heavily bloostained.

On Friday, detectives appealed for information from anyone who saw a friend or relative with blood on their clothes over the weekend.

North Wales police announced on Thursday they would be examining CCTV film of traffic on the Britannia Bridge in the hunt for the murderer.

They are still anxious to trace the driver of a light-coloured - possibly blue - van which was seen parked in Ms Leyshon's driveway in the days before her death.

Despite repeated appeals, the owner of the van has failed to come forward.

Detective Seargeant Keith Jones of North Wales Police said: "We have to keep a totally open mind about who committed this brutal crime.

"Our inquiries are spread across the country, as we realise it is very easy in these times for people to move around."

Detectives had already enlisted the help of the national crime faculty and a criminal psychologist to create a profile of Ms Leyshon's attacker.

Meanwhile, officers continue to search for the murder weapon, which they describe as "some kind of bladed weapon".

It has emerged that Mrs Leyshon had spoken to a friend from Birkenhead, Liverpool, on the telephone last Saturday at 1430GMT.

Regular police patrols in the area have been stepped up as detectives urge residents to be "good neighbours" to their elderly neighbours.

Anyone with information should contact North Wales Police on 01286 684868.
