Prince Charles
Prince Charles set up the Prince's Trust charity
A "Bicycle Doctor" from the Rhondda has pedalled his way to victory at the Prince's Trust Welsh Young Entrepreneur awards in Cardiff.

Jamie Rowland's customer care, marketing skills and drive impressed the judges of the competition, established by the Prince of Wales to support businesses set up by young people.

The awards recognise success in the first years of trading, and the winner will now push on to a UK final in Spring 2002.

The winner of the Prince's Trust-Cymru and The Royal Bank of Scotland Business Awards, Jamie was awarded 500 at the Millennium Stadium on Friday for his bicycle repair enterprise.

Shortlisted businesses in Wales include Siach, which hosts childrens parties in Blackwood, Gwent, and the Bicycle Doctor from Porth.

Other finalists are Gwenllian Jones-Thomas, who has opened a beauty salon in Llandysul, west Wales, and Alexander Oswald from Port Talbot, who supplies Liquid Petroleum Gas.

The last two nominees are Kim Robinson, from Pembroke Dock, who set up a fitness club, and Richard Bowen from Swansea, who started his own firm providing geophysical exploration services.

Nurturing entrepreneurs

"The Business Awards help to celebrate the Trust's work in developing and nurturing young entrepreneurs," said Tom Davies, the Prince's Trust Regional Director for Wales.

"The success of the young entrepreneurs who have been shortlisted prove that when they are well supported, they can compete in the marketplace as well as making a positive contribution to their local communities."

The businesses have been shortlisted for the awards following nominations from their mentors.

Around 400 businesses in Wales are helped by the charity each year, and the Prince makes frequent trips to Wales to check on its progress.

It is the first year that The Royal Bank of Scotland Group have sponsored the awards.
