Sophie George: Parents convicted of manslaughter

Last month Sophie George's stepfather Gareth Edwards and mother Amanda were given a 12-month suspended sentence by a judge at Caernarfon Crown Court for the girls' manslaughter through gross negligence.

The two young friends were killed by a passenger train as they played on the railway bridge while the family enjoyed a picnic nearby.

The memorial is to be sited near the bridge and the stones brass plaque will bear the names of both girls.

There was controversy in the girls' home village of Tre'r Ddol near Aberystwyth when a handcrafted bench erected there featured only Sophie's name.

The tragedy has led to much discord locally with some villagers campaigning to get the mansalughter charges against the Edwards dropped.

Kymberly Allcock died in the tragedy

Kymberly's father Tony Allcock has since moved away from the area to England, claiming he was driven from the area by threats and abuse for demanding that charges should be brought.

Mr Allcock said he felt he could not attend Friday's ceremony which will take place beside the River Clettwr.

In a separate move Railtrack and the Countryside Council for Wales have been sent for trial over the deaths of two schoolgirls

The organisations have both denied allegations of health and safety breaches.
