Two climbers have been seriously hurt in separate incidents in Snowdonia.

David Aitken, 53, from Stoke Newington, London, was climbing Idwal Slabs when he fell 100m into a gully.

It is thought his life may have been saved when his arm became caught in a rockface crack as he fell. His condition is described as "very poorly".

Meanwhile, 18-year-old student Andrew McCluskey, of Hemel Hempstead, was poorly but stable in hospital at Bangor after he plunged 65m from Bristley Ridge, on the Glyder Range in Snowdonia.

Airlift

Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Service spent two hours reaching Mr Aitken, who was airlifted by a helicopter from RAF Valley to Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital in Bangor.

But his condition worsened and the climber was taken to Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool.

Mr McCluskey was rescued in a separate incident when he slipped from a cliff top.

A friend used a mobile phone to alert rescuers and the teenager was also airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd, where his condition was described as critical.
