| Thursday, 4 October, 2001, 16:55 GMT 17:55 UK Store cordoned off after explosion ![]() Police have cordoned off a department store at Llantrisant near Cardiff after officers found what they believe to be the car of a man injured in an earlier explosion. A 200-metre cordon has gone up around the Leekes department store in the town.
Meanwhile, around 40 houses in the nearby community of Brynna have been evacuated after an explosion at a house on Thursday lunchtime. The road in front of the store has been closed and the bomb disposal unit is on its way to the scene. Bomb disposal officers are also inspecting the scene of the explosion at a house a couple of miles away in Meadow Rise, Brynna, near Pontyclun. Two men were injured in the blast and both have been taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. One of the men has minor injuries and shock but the other man has been seriously hurt suffering arm injuries.
He is set to be transferred to Morriston Hospital in Swansea. Neighbours heard a huge bang just after 1300BST and saw one of the men running from the house at Meadow Rise, Brynna, near Pontyclun with serious injuries to both his arms and burns to his face. Neighbours said the house was owned by a couple in their 40s and it was believed the owner and a friend were injured in the blast. One of the victims was thought to have been in the kitchen, while the other person was in the front room of the property. Electrical fault Gas and electricity experts are now at the scene of the explosion, but its cause was not yet known. Police and fire officers cordoned off the street and nearby homes were also evacuated. Emergency accommodation was being found for residents by the local council. Gas utility company Transco has sent an engineer to the scene. South Wales Police Inspector Joe Ruddy said: "We believe it was an electrical fault and that the man has sustained burn injuries." |
