MP joins speeding law change call
Darren Ferguson, Wrexham FC midfielder
Darren Ferguson: cleared of speeding charge
Wrexham MP Ian Lucas has pledged his backing to any moves to consider the ramifications of a court case in which Wrexham footballer Darren Ferguson was cleared of speeding.

Mr Ferguson, 29, was recently acquitted by Wrexham magistrates after he did not appear in court and a police officer was unable to identify the driver of the vehicle.

The Crown Prosecution Service and North Wales Police are now having talks about the implications of the case.

Ferguson, the footballing son of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, had faced a possible driving ban.

At the time, it emerged solicitor Nick Freeman had used the identification issue in a case involving another footballer.

There are concerns the situation could arise again in future court cases.

Mr Lucas - who is also a solicitor - said speeding was a very serious offence and he said if the law required changing, he would support such moves.

The MP added road traffic issues were not high enough on the political agenda, because they but were not a "sexy subject".

The 100mph incident was the second speeding charge faced by Darren Ferguson in a week.

He was first accused of driving in Mosside, Manchester, at 43mph in a 30mph limit after his Mercedes was caught on a speed camera.

The player at first admitted the offence on a form sent out in the post but later realised his wife had been at the wheel and he was subsequently cleared.

Police then stopped Ferguson in a different car, a BMW, driving at nearly 100mph on a dual carriageway.

But District Judge Ward was told that no identification had been shown at the time and the Crown Prosecution Service had failed to prove the driver was Ferguson.
