Geraldine Hughes's killer may yet be tracked down

Detectives hunting their killer have already turned to the internet for help and have now renewed calls for fresh evidence.

The16-year-olds had been raped and strangled in woods along a road near their home after a night out in Swansea.

Despite a massive police investigation no one was ever convicted of their murder.

Over 30,000 people were questioned, including 10,000 motorists, in connection with the double murders.

Crimewatch

The girls were thought to have hitched a ride home from the Top Rank club in Swansea.

They are thought to have travelled in a light coloured car, which has never been traced.

The BBC TV programme Crimewatch UK - which was screened last January - also gave the investigation a major boost, showing a reconstruction of the events leading up to the girls' deaths.

Earlier this year detectives began a DNA sampling campaign after gathering evidence last November.

Scientists had worked on stains from the dead girls clothes and isolated the DNA profile of an unknown man who was possibly the killer.

The testing programme is continuing and figures last month revealed that 190 men had been eliminated from the inquiry out of a 217 tested.

Police were still waiting for the results from some of the samples.
