| Friday, 17 August, 2001, 17:34 GMT 18:34 UK Robinson winds up Welsh contestants ![]() Anne Robinson shows no signs of softening Weakest Link host Anne Robinson is to turn her vitriolic tongue back on the Welsh again in an all-Welsh special of the show. Robinson was criticised for comments earlier this year on the BBC's Room 101, when she called the Welsh "irritating" and asked "what are they for?".
The BBC received hundreds of calls of complaint and Welsh MPs called for Ms Robinson to be reprimanded. She refused to apologise, Room 101 was allowed to be repeated and BBC governors decided not to discipline her. But the 56-year-old presenter - who recently turned the Weakest Link into a US ratings hit - resorted to Welsh stereotypes in the show, The Welshest Link, mocking her contestants. Robinson could not resist a series of jibes about mining, daffodils and the Welsh language.
Robinson began a series of insults by mocking Darren's performance on the show: "You didn't do very well in that round." But the south Walian attacked her for wearing an Issey Miyake black crepe top, with diagonal stripes. "At least I don't look like an extra from Space 1999. I wanted to have a word with you about the way you dress, it looks a bit odd."
But Robinson countered with a cutting jibe about his Welsh roots: "There's not much Issey Miyake in the Rhondda." Robinson went on to wind up other contestants about their origins. At one point she asked: "Who is not the brightest daffodil in the bunch?" Other jibes included: "Who is several choruses short of an Eisteddfod" and "whose pit has run out of coal?" Earlier this year, Ms Robinson decided to make amends for her anti-Welsh comments by doing a free Easter promotional campaign for the Wales Tourist Board, at the height of foot-and-mouth crisis. The Welshest Link - broadcast on Monday 20 August at 1715 BST on BBC Two - is one of a series of special editions of the show. They include a reality game show episode, featuring Big Brother and Survivor contestants, and a football special with stars from the sport playing for charity. | See also: Top Wales stories now: Links to more Wales stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
