A man was killed and three others injured after a chemical fumes leak at a waste disposal plant.

The uncontrolled chemical release sparked a major containment operation at Park Environmental Services, in Corporation Road, Newport, south Wales, on Monday.

Gwent Police cordoned off roads leading to the plant as firefighters battled to control the problem. Five ambulances were on stand-by at the scene for several hours.

Four men from the plant, which deals with the disposal of chemical waste, were taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, where one later died, police said.

Inquiry launched

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 1825BST after a report of an uncontrolled release of hydrogen sulphide.

A police spokesman said the chemical release was now under control but emergency crews remained on site throughout the night.

A joint police and health and safety executive investigation into the incident would be taking place, the spokesman said.
