Merthyr girls became models in the name of fundraising
Top dress designer Julien Macdonald can command thousands of pounds for one of his outfits.

But fashion lovers in his home town of Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, were given the chance to snap up one of his exclusive creations for just 50p.

The knock-down price was in aid of charity - following a plea for help from Julien's old school, Twynyrodyn Infants.

The school was delighted after raising 1,200 from the event, which had started out as a simple school raffle and ended up as a stylish catwalk show.

Macdonald stunned the fashion world after succeeding Alexander McQueen at the French fashion house of Givenchy.

The designer responded generously to the request for help from the school, where his nephew Jarvis Morgan is a pupil.

For one night only, stylish suits and daring dresses which would not have looked out of place on the catwalks of Paris or Milan were being modelled by Merthyr girls.

And, if you bought your 50p raffle ticket, you were in with a chance of taking home a designer dream outfit.

One of the winners, Samantha Bond, was so excited at winning a stylish blue dress that she tried it on in the nursery and was delighted to discover it fitted.

"She looked stunning," said deputy head Elaine Murphy.

"We are all still buzzing from the event."

The award-winning designer has described his outfits in the past as "sex on legs".

He is renowned for his revealing creations, coveted by A-list celebrities like the Spice Girls, Kylie Minogue, Kelly Brock, Liz Hurley, Nicole Kidman, and Joely Richardson.

But the numbers chosen for the Merthyr show were less racy than might have been expected.

Pupils and staff spent the whole of Monday hard at work transforming the school - and themselves - in time for the big show.

What started as a small request turned into a community event, with locals turning out to help - and teachers and pupils' mothers standing in as supermodels for the night.

And it was a family occasion, too, with Julien's sister and nephew strutting down the catwalk.
