| Tuesday, 8 May, 2001, 06:52 GMT 07:52 UK German awaits exam board report ![]() Details of Mr German's expenditure are expected The Welsh Assembly's Deputy First Minister Mike German is bracing himself for the outcome of an investigation into the examinations body he once headed. The report, due to be discussed on Tuesday, will cover the management of the European Unit of the Welsh exams board, the Welsh Joint Education Committee. It is expected to include references to his business dealings and the use of a corporate credit card.
The committee called in external auditors when it emerged that it might have to pay a sizeable sum back to the EU as a result of the unit's operations. A report by accountants Pricewaterhouse Coopers suggested last year the WJEC could have to give back more than 400,000 in european grants. Mr German has insisted that the unit was in the black when he left and he has denied being responsible for financial management in his post, which he left at the end of 1998. Nothing to hide The report due to be considered by the WJEC's board on Tuesday afternoon is expected to include his answers to 130 questions about his role - as well as his personal business dealings, his use of a corporate credit card, and the justification for overseas trips. Liberal Democrat assembly member Mr German has always insisted he has done nothing wrong and has nothing to hide. Nevertheless, the political sensitivity of such an inquiry involving the linchpin of the assembly coalition can hardly be overstated. |
