| Saturday, 14 April, 2001, 14:48 GMT 15:48 UK Memorial to Glyndwr's daughter ![]() Owain Glyndwr's daughter died in London A memorial statue to the daughter of Welsh legend Owain Glyndwr is due to be unveiled in London later this year. Catrin was captured with her children at Harlech in 1409, during Owain's fight for the freedom of Wales. The 10-foot high sculpture in Gelligaer bluestone will be unveiled on Cannon Street in London on Glyndwr's Day - 16 September.
The design for the sculpture was created by Pontypridd-based Nic Stradlyn-John, and sculpted by Cwmdu-based Richard Renshaw. The statue represents the suffering of women and children in war and is also intended to celebrate the enduring spirit of Wales. Calls were made last autumn on the 600th anniversary of Owain Glyndwr for a Glyndwr Day bank holiday on 16 September. Glyndwr, who was proclaimed Prince of Wales on September 16, 1400 after rebelling against English rule, is a key figure in Welsh history and was the last Welsh-born Prince of Wales.
Memorial celebrations stretched from Ruthin - where the uprising against the English began in 1400 - to Machynlleth, where Glyndwr held the first Welsh parliament. Last autumn in Machynlleth, a special sculpture to Glyndwr by artist Ieuan Rees was unveiled. The Welsh Tourist Board urged people to fly the Welsh flag from their homes. |
