| Wednesday, 11 April, 2001, 20:35 GMT 21:35 UK Tributes to 'Clown Prince of Wales' ![]() Sir Harry Secombe was Wales's comic son Tributes from across Wales have been paid to Sir Harry Secombe, who was known affectionately as "The Clown Prince of Wales". Cultural historian Peter Stead described Sir Harry as "Swansea's most famous son after Dylan Thomas". "Harry was a natural entertainer who had theatre in his bones," he said.
BBC Wales radio and TV presenter and comedian Owen Money spoke of his sadness on hearing of Sir Harry's death. "I heard Sir Harry had died moments ago in my car on the radio and it was a real shock. People all over Wales will be absolutely devastated," he said. "I used to listen to him all the time on the radio and in my early days as a performer he was very complimentary about my act and encouraged me.
"He was a great man and I will be playing some of his songs such as, If I Ruled the World, on my radio show tomorrow. "I feel a bit choked at hearing this and I know a lot of people who knew and respected him at BBC Radio Wales will feel the same." In Sir Harry's home city, there are already plans to commemorate one of the city's most famous sons. Neddie Seegoon Lawrence Bailey, the Labour-ruled council's deputy leader, said: "I can say without fear of contradiction we as a council will do something to commemorate his life. "I feel almost as if I have lost a family member. "My mother grew up close to the St Thomas estate where he lived. "She still talks about him singing in the chapels of St Thomas when she was a young girl. "This is a great loss for Swansea. "It is strange to think how exactly he will be remembered. "For many it will be as a singer but others will always see him as Neddie Seegoon. "But there is no doubt in my mind that we as a city will do something to commemorate his long contribution over the years." |
