Archbishop: Government needs more courage
Archbishop of Wales Dr Rowan Williams
Archbishop Williams has criticised the government
The Archbishop of Wales has criticised the government for failing to "show more courage and vision".

Archbishop Dr Rowan Williams made the criticisms in his role as president of a new Welsh, left-wing think-tank called the Bevan Foundation.

Conceding that he could face criticisms for taking a left-of-centre political position, the archbishop said: "We've had a very cautious few years, " he said.

"I'd very much hope to see more courage and initiative in the next administration."

The Bevan Foundation - named after the revered Welsh Labour politician Aneurin Bevan and based in his home town of Tredegar - is launched on Thursday - St David's Day.

It describes itself as a radical independent think-tank.

Among the foundation's 100 well-known backers are the European Commissioner Neil Kinnock, former Labour leader Michael Foot, union leaders, and even pop stars.

The foundation, whose part time director is journalist Paul Starling, has claimed that its aim is to 'Think the Unthinkable' about policies and politics in and for Wales.

The Bevan Foundation is being launched in Swansea as the Welsh Labour Party opens its Spring Conference.

A planned speech by the Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to the conference has been cancelled because of the rail crash near Selby.

The conference is expected to look ahead to policies for the next National Assembly elections in 2003.

A full interview with the Archbishop can be seen on BBC Wales's Dragons Eye on BBC 2 Wales at 2000 on Thursday.
