Since then, the lager has been brewed under contract by Thwaites in Blackburn, Lancashire.

The brand's new home is likely to be the historic Cambrian Brewery at St Giles Way in Wrexham town centre.

Carslberg-Tetley Group Operations Director John Smith said: " We are pleased to be playing our part in the project.

"Commercial factors compelled us to move the brand to Thwaites but we have always understood the loyalty of Wrexham to its lager brand.

Project leader David Priestley said the agreement was an important step in bringing the back to its original home.

"We still face issues such as funding for Cambrian Brewery's refurbishment and the plant, and obtaining any necessary planning permissions and consents," he said.

'Excellent news'

"I feel confident that, having secured the rights to brew Wrexham Lager, that all other outstanding issues will be resolved.

"Our aim is to start production in Wrexham within 18 months or so," he added.

Clwyd South MP Martyn Jones is a former employee at the Wrexham Lager Brewery and has supported the project from the start.

"The agreement is excellent news. The consortium is committed to ensuring that Wrexham Lager is once again brewed in the town," he said.

It is not yet known how many jobs will be created at the Cambrian Brewery.
