| Saturday, 27 January, 2001, 15:24 GMT Soldiers hurt in mid Wales crash ![]() Sennybridge is one of Britiain's largest training grounds Eighteen soldiers have been taken to hospital after their truck crashed while on exercises in mid Wales. The Royal Irish Regiment troops were travelling from base at Dering Lines, Brecon, to Sennybridge for training when the troop carrier skidded on black ice early on Saturday. The lorry, the last in a convoy of three, veered off the road and hit trees and bushes at Llanspyddyd on the A40. A family from a nearby farm ran to the scene after their farmhouse was shaken by the impact. Eight ambulances were sent to the scene, but the soldiers, who are based in Canterbury, escaped with minor cuts and bruises.
An army spokesman said none had serious injuries, although the injuries of two soldiers were more serious than the rest. Most have now been discharged. Last January, another troop carrier with sixteen soldiers on board overturned on training exercises on the Sennybridge firing range. A week later, a soldier was shot in the back during an exercise on the firing range. The army has launched an inquiry into today's incident. |
