| Tuesday, 12 December, 2000, 13:26 GMT 'Slap' teacher faces hearing ![]() Marjorie Evans will now face a disciplinary hearing The south Wales head teacher convicted of slapping a pupil and later cleared on appeal is to face a disciplinary hearing. Marjorie Evans, 56, was suspended from St Mary's Junior School in Caldicot in September 1999 after being charged with assault on an unruly 10-year-old. An appeal cleared her, but she is still suspended from work and had hoped to return to school before Christmas. But governors at the school announced on Tuesday that she would now face a disciplinary hearing. A statement by the school's acting head said: "Governors of St Mary's Junior School met last evening to consider issues relating to allegations of inappropriate behaviour at the school.
"The matter will now be dealt with under internal disciplinary procedures and further comment would be inappropriate at this stage." When Mrs Evans was cleared by the High Court in September of slapping the pupil, she announced that she wanted to get back to work at the school as soon as possible. On Monday night, governors at the school met to discuss her case and said they had come to a "firm decision" about her future. They said that although the headteacher was cleared on appeal, they needed to decide whether or not she had broken school procedures and whether or not she should face an internal disciplinary inquiry. 'Heartfelt sympathy' Mrs Evans said support she had received from members of the public had kept her going throughout her ordeal. But she was upset that details of a private letter she received from Prince Charles were leaked to the media. The Prince's private secretary Stephen Lamport wrote to Mrs Evans expressing his "heartfelt sympathy" and suggesting they meet to discuss her ordeal over the past months. NUT Wales secretary Gethin Lewis said the union had been in touch with St James's Palace to sort out arrangements for the meeting. |
