| Tuesday, 28 November, 2000, 18:15 GMT Nurse wins 100,000 payout ![]() A former staff nurse at Cardiff Royal Infirmary who was forced to give up her job after developing severe eczema from the use of rubber gloves has been awarded 100,000 in compensation. Diane Chambers, from Tonteg near Pontypridd, developed an eczema rash in 1990. Ms Chambers said she told her manager at the hospital about the problem but was refused an alternative type of glove. Her condition deteriorated until she retired through ill health in November 1997.
Jon Richards, Unison's national officer for health, said there were alternative gloves available and they should have been given to Ms Chambers. "Instead the hospital has not only lost a good nurse, but have to pay compensation for the damage they have caused and Diane is now a patient that need long-term medical care," said Mr Richards. Ms Chambers continues to suffer from the condition and needs to apply moisturising creams regularly on her hands, as well as ointments and creams, depending on the severity of the dermatitis. "After 18 months at the hospital, the skin on both my hands practically sheared right off," she said. "I told my manager at the hospital, but they refused point blank to provide me with an alternative type of glove." "Eczema is a very depressing condition. I have lost a career which I liked and was good at, my social life and friends at the hospital." "I am only speaking out about what happened to me because if I can save one person from going through the hell I have, it will be worth it," added Ms Chambers. "I'd rather have my health back. I'd rather be the way I was," she said. |
