| Wednesday, 8 November, 2000, 08:58 GMT Trust's warning over Valleys youth ![]() The report said young people in Merthyr were disadvantaged A major new study has warned of serious problems with youth deprivation in three areas of south Wales. The report by the UK's leading youth charity, the Prince's Trust, names Blaenau Gwent as one of 12 problem hot spots pinpointed in Britain.
The report also warns that youngsters in Caerphilly and Merthyr Tydfil are disadvantaged. Blaenau Gwent is named as one of 12 districts where young people are least likely to succeed and face a problematic transition from adolescense to adulthood. The report said that despite Wales's relatively small population it has high levels of disdadvantage in terms of income, education and crime. In Merthyr Tydfil and Blaenau Gwent, a disproportionately high number of youngsters receive means-tested benefits. The report also claims there is higher levels of underachievement, truancy and school exclusion. In nearby Caerphilly, there is also a high level of need. |
