There are fresh calls for the leader of the Catholic Church in Wales to resign after a BBC documentary uncovered evidence that he ignored serious warnings about two paedophiles working in his diocese.

The Archbishop of Cardiff has expressed deep sorrow at the events, but he has refused to stand down.

He has said he always acted in good faith - but a number of priests say he should now stand down.

Archbishop John Ward has been the most senior Catholic cleric in Wales for the past 17 years.

But he has presided over a church which allowed two paedophiles to slip through the net.

Warnings ignored

A joint investigation by BBC Wales and the current affairs programme Panorama revealed that the Archbishop ignored serious warnings about Father John Lloyd - jailed in 1998 - and father Joe Jordan jailed just two weeks ago.

On Sunday night, Panorama revealed the Archbishop was warned that Joe Jordan had been accused of indecently assaulting boys - and it was recommended that he was assessed by an expert in paedophilia.

That never happened.

Though determined not to resign Archbishop Ward says he is writing to the Pope asking him to appoint another Archbishop to work alongside him.
