City benefit fraudsters targeted

Posters and leaflets are being distributed across Dundee

Benefit cheats are being targeted in a new campaign by Dundee City Council.

Posters and leaflets are being handed out throughout the city to highlight how members of the public can report suspected fraudsters.

Anyone caught cheating the benefit system could face a prison sentence, be fined, have other benefits taken away and have to pay the money back.

In 2006-07, it was estimated that 700m was claimed fraudulently across the UK by benefit thieves.

Councillor Joe Morrow said: "Benefit fraud is a serious matter that affects us all because, at the end of the day, the money that is being illegally claimed for is being drained from other services.

"It is something that this council takes seriously and that is why we have put measures in place to help stamp it out.

"We have made it as easy as possible for people to let our counter-fraud team know of anyone who may be defrauding benefit and this renewed campaign will draw attention to the various ways that fraud can be reported."
