Round-the-world cyclist Mark Beaumont has gone back to his old school to thank the pupils for all their support during his trip. While the 25-year-old was on his record breaking journey, the youngsters at the High School of Dundee raised money for the charities he was backing. In their classes they learned about the different countries, cultures and landscapes he was encountering. Mr Beaumont cycled more than 18,000 miles in 195 days. He completed his record-breaking round-the-world cycle in February. The Fife cyclist, who is originally from Bridge of Cally in Perthshire, met and chatted with pupils during his day at the High School. He handed over cycling jerseys and a replica of Ted Bear - a teddy the pupils had sent him during his world trip - to those who had excelled in the fundraising efforts.  |  It was really good, he's just been an inspiration to everyone |
He also collected cheques totalling �2,500 which the youngsters had raised for five different charities. It was the first time in eight years Mr Beaumont had been back to the school and he told the BBC Scotland news website that it was "incredible". He said: "It was just amazing to see the delight on the children's faces and realise that they'd been having this parallel journey following me all the way around the world across all the different subjects. "I was aware a bit in abstract when I was on the road that there was so many people back home following it, but to actually go and meet them was very special." The pupils were just as impressed by Mr Beaumont. Tough challenge Kiera, 14, said: "It was really good, he's just been an inspiration to everyone. "We've all been trying to follow his progress, it's really interesting. "He said a bit about the different cultures and the different places he visited and how much he enjoyed speaking to the different people." Lauren, also 14, said: "It was pretty amazing because we've been hearing about him at school and it's just strange seeing him in person. "He was very talkative and he was a really nice guy." She admitted that she would have found it tough to do what Mr Beaumont had done, especially getting up in the morning and being motivated.
