Wheelchair manufacturer to close

It is believed 95 people will lose their jobs
A Tayside politician has expressed his dismay after being told that a wheelchair manufacturer in Dundee is to close.

Stewart Hosie MP has been told that 95 people will be made redundant when the Lomax Mobility factory shuts.

It is thought that increased competition is to blame and the company has struggled to reduce costs.

Mr Hosie has arranged to meet senior managers on Thursday to explore all possibilities for the plant's future.

'Devastating blow'

He said: "This is a devastating blow for Dundee's manufacturing sector.

"We are once again seeing manufacturing jobs in the city being lost for reasons of manufacturing costs and the competitiveness of the market.

"From my previous visits to the factory prior to the take over by Sunrise Medical in 2005, I had understood that the company were successful and enjoying a period of growth in the market.

"I have now been informed that the company has struggled against lower-cost competitors for the past few years."

Mr Hosie has also called for Dundee City Council, the Scottish Government and the UK Government to come up with a strategy to maintain the manufacturing sector in the face of the threat of lower-cost competitors overseas.
