Public 'watching' drink drivers
Drink driving check
13 drivers were arrested in the first week of the festive campaign
Tayside Police have praised members of the public who are willing to report drink and drug drivers.

In the first week of their festive campaign targeting those who are under the influence, 13 motorists were arrested.

Eleven of the arrests were for drink driving offences, two were for getting behind the wheel after taking drugs.

Seven people were caught following calls from the public, another one was reported by an off-duty police officer.

The number of arrests is down on the same period last year, when 20 people were caught drink or drug driving.

'Being watched'

Ch Insp Sandy Bowman, head of road policing in Tayside, said: "I am extremely pleased with the public response to the first week of this year's campaign.

"Those who risk driving after consuming alcohol or taking drugs should be aware that people are prepared to phone in and report them.

"It could be the person standing next to them in the pub or at the Christmas party. It might be a colleague at work or even a family member.

"It's not simply a case of looking out for the police. If you are a drink or drug driver - you are being watched."

Among those arrested were a 45-year-old man who was stopped in Arbroath and found to be nearly five times the drink drive limit; a 52-year-old who was arrested on the A90 while disqualified and nearly three times the limit and a 17-year-old stopped in Perthshire, who also committed an number of other road traffic offences.

Three of the 13 arrested were involved in collisions, including a 61-year-old woman in Dundee.
