Migrant workers gather in Falkirk
Falkirk Town Hall
More than 4,000 migrant workers currently live in the town
The biggest gathering of migrants in Scotland is taking place in Falkirk.

The town, which currently has more than 4,000 migrant workers, is hosting a support and information event on living and working in Scotland.

Research by Citizens Advice Scotland found that people coming from abroad to work in the country often receive low pay and work longer hours.

The event, at Falkirk Town Hall, is being organised by the New Migrants Action Project.

Recent studies discovered that while many new migrants to Scotland have a positive view of the country, there are significant numbers who have experienced exploitation by employers and landlords.

Those who attend will be given information on employment rights, housing, health and welfare advice.

A life of discrimination, exploitation and poverty is no way to attract and retain the 'fresh talent' in Scotland

Event organiser Michael Collins said it was imperative that Scotland ensured migrant rights were protected to safeguard the supply of skilled workers to the country.

He said: "Some migrants have less rights than others, and most have difficulty exercising the rights they do have.

"We know anecdotally that migrant workers are leaving Scotland every day because of the very real difficulties they face, and a lack of information, help and support.

"A life of discrimination, exploitation and poverty is no way to attract and retain the 'fresh talent' in Scotland."

Minister for Europe and external affairs, Linda Fabiani said it was vital that similar events took place across Scotland.

She added: "The Scottish Government is committed to attracting bright, hardworking and motivated people to live and work in Scotland."

People attending the information day will also receive a multi-lingual leaflet and booklet detailing the role of the police in Scotland, the criminal justice service and road safety advice.
