Cash boost for rail freight drive
Lorry
The subsidy will remove one million lorry miles from the busy A90
A rail freight company is to receive 750,000 to reduce the number of lorries on the A90.

Direct Rail Services (DRS) has been given the grant by the Scottish Executive to transport goods between central Scotland and Aberdeen.

Most of the freight will be from ASDA's distribution depot in Grangemouth.

Ministers said the subsidy would remove One million lorry miles from the trunk road - the equivalent of 25,000 journeys over the next three years.

Reduce congestion

DRS has already been awarded 269,500 and will receive another 475,700 in April 2008, depending on the results of a spending review.

Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson made the announcement on a visit to Grangemouth.

He said: "Many of us have been caught up in delays along the A90.

"We want to reduce congestion across Scotland and minimise the potential impact on the economy.

"This award to DRS will continue to free up the route to and from the north east while reducing emissions."
