Burger van ban touted by council

Burger vans wont be allowed near schools at lunchtimes
Fast food vans in and around Falkirk Council schools could be off the menu for pupils as licensing controls look set to be tightened.

The local authority is discussing the introduction of an exclusion zone of 500m in a bid to encourage healthier eating in schools.

The proposed ban would only come into effect during term time, between lunch times and at the end of the day.

The move would be in line with the council's healthy eating standards.

'Nutritional value'

A number of revamped licensing proposals were also put forward at a meeting of Falkirk Council's policy and resources committee on Thursday.

They included forcing late night hot food take-away premises and street traders to ensure that their shop/van frontages are kept clear of rubbish and waste.

Councillor Linda Gow, committee convener, said: "We are already committed to ensuring that our pupils have access to healthy and affordable food at lunchtime and taking this step will limit the amount of fast food available immediately outside school grounds.

"Every application by a trader for a license will be taken on its own merit and if the licensing authority are satisfied with the range of food available and the nutritional value of the products available, they may be minded to grant an application to trade during school hours in proximity to the school."
