Couple go 'green' to tie the knot

A couple are planning to go "green" this weekend with what could be one of the most environmentally friendly weddings in the country.

Chris Marr, 25, and Cat Lee, 24, are due to tie the knot at Monikie Country Park on Saturday.

The couple, from Carnoustie, have organised everything based on their eco-friendly principles - right down to invitations made from elephant dung.

Mr Marr said: "We're both looking forward to it - it should be good."

The couple, who met while Miss Lee was studying art at Dundee University's Duncan of Jordanstone College, designed their own invitations and thank-you cards made from Ellie Poo paper - a mixture of recycled paper and organically processed elephant dung.

The bride's dress has come from Oxfam, the rings are made out of recycled gold and the flowers will be of the wild variety, picked on the morning of the wedding and composted afterwards.

Mr Marr and Miss Lee are also planning to walk to the ceremony with the rest of their wedding party.

Guests will later dine on a vegan menu at the reception at nearby Monikie Memorial Hall.

Family support

The couple have even forgone wedding presents and have asked guests to either give them a piece of material to be made into a wall hanging or quilt, or a donation towards an eco house they hope to built.

Mr Marr told BBC Scotland's news website: "We wanted to have a day where it was as close as possible to how we live our lives on a day-to-day basis.

"We didn't want to change anything just because it was our wedding day."

He added: "Our friends and family have been a really big help and everyone has been really positive about the whole thing.

"They all really liked the invitations too."

The couple, who plan to take each other's names, are now looking for a site to build their eco friendly house.
