Falkirk Council has the highest free school meal uptake in mainland Scotland, according to figures. A total of 97% of all eligible pupils attending schools in the area claimed free meals this year, an increase of 5% on the previous year.
The council said this had been achieved by making parents aware of their entitlement and by ensuring free meal provision was completely anonymous.
A spokesman said its meals were also currently the cheapest in Scotland.
The council's figures also showed it topped mainland Scotland for the highest total uptake of school meals in primary schools at 62.9%.
It also achieved an increase in total secondary school meals uptake to 56.7%.
The council's education and leisure committee convener, Dr Alex Waddell, said it was encouraging to see so many families claim free meals.
He said: "This has been achieved by a co-ordinated approach by our school meals, education, registrars and one-stop-shop services who ensured that parents entitled to claim for other things like clothing allowances were made aware of their entitlement to claim free school meals."
